Gospel of Thomas, Logion 1, Immortality

Today my card is inspired by the first logion of the Gospel of Thomas. This is an important early, non-canonical text with sayings by Jesus. The gospel stems from the Nag Hammadi Library, a bunch of texts found in the middle of the twentieth century in a clay pot.
These are the words of the logion: (1) And he said: “Whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death.” I wondered, What do these words mean? They allude to the worth of the gospel, to the amount of salvation that they are able to bring according to the person wrote them. But that is not what my card is saying.

I have pulled Spear Knight (Knight of Wands) from the Arthurian Tarot.

The knight is riding full speed and aiming his spear right at the heart of the matter. He rides in the middle of the day, no shadow to confuse him. Seeing the card, I think the words of this logion encourage us to really want to understand the gospel. That we read it with passion and confidence, in order to be able to get out of them what it is in them.

What I like about this logion is the stress on the act of interpretation. It are not the words that do it but we have to do something in ourselves to retrieve meaning from them. And to be honest, when I look at the card I see this knight driving and aiming for ever aiming to understand these words, but never arriving.
