There is a harmony in autumn,
and a lustre in its sky,
Which through the summer
Is not heard or seen.
Percy Bysshe Shelly
I’ve pulled the Devil from the Victorian Romantic Tarot as an image for the harmony I have in my life.
I aimed with my question at a positive card and that is what the Devil shows me. I lured myself with that. That is the humor of tarot. It won’t budge. It brings me back to myself as a good therapist would do. The image shows a woman who lures the onlooker with offerings. There is a falseness in that; just as I am false, wanting to pull a positive card, not wanting to look in truthfulness to my life.
That is the answer for the harmony in my life. But is the harmony of autumn not a lure too? Does not this Devil depicts this as well? The harmony of autumn is very, very transient and it forebodes the death of winter. It is devilish, just like this Devil who holds up a diamond bracelet and steps on a white lily, symbol of purity. Nothing pure, nothing harmony, decay, that is what autumn is.
