Candlemas in Belgium

Candle mass and my workshop about it in Belgium is past now. I’ve never taught in such a beautiful working space; big and warm at the same time. The room had windows on three sides with a view on meadows and bare fields. It was very fitting for the occasion – the increasing light and the seeds growing in the earth, both themes of Candlemas, were all around us.

The room was so big that we could easily stand in a circle, with the tables pushed to the sides. There even were mattresses for meditation. So we had our meditation lying down. During the night it was extremely cold. It took me hours to get warm. But that was the only setback.

I experimented with responses, little songs, during sharing moments: such as “Peace to you..peace to you…” on a melody. I could easily experiment with it because it was in a religious setting. It worked out well. No time to weave a Brigid cross, no time for decorating a candle with their hopes and wishes, but they did draw a healing sun with water color pencils. And I was glad about that, because I had done my best to find the right pencils and paper. Just as in the course on dreams on Thursday, the part about saint and the goddess Brigit -who belongs to Candlemas– did not work at all; not that they said so, I felt it. She just stays far away.
