Gospel of Thomas, Logion 6, Lion and Man

I’ve worked on logion 7 from the Gospel of Thomas. It is a dark, not understood part of the Gospel. The logion resonates with the Strength card in the tarot, it is about a lion and a human being.

(7) Jesus said, "Blessed is the lion which becomes man when consumed by man; and cursed is the man whom the lion consumes, and the lion becomes man."

I’ve asked the tarot two questions: (1) Why is the lion which becomes man when consumed by man, blessed? (2) Why is the man cursed whom the lion consumes?

For the lion who becomes human I have pulled Two of Swords from the Tarot of the White Cats. And for the man who consumes the lion I drew the Ace of Swords. I pulled the deck to work with, and I loved the feline theme of the deck for this logion.

The Two of Swords -the card of the lion which becomes human- shows that the lion gets the ability to look inside himself. It does not attack without thinking anymore, like a lion does, but is able to reflect on its behavior and make choices. It lost its power as lion, but is more human, (however quite indecisive). The waxing moon shows that he is growing in wisdom.

The Ace of Swords is the card of the man whom the lion consumes and is cursed. A cat becomes a knight on the card. Knights swear loyalty to their kings (crown on the card). They shall fight if they are ordered to. The cat will have a “not thinking, but only following orders” attitude, which can be dangerous and is an excuse for misdeeds. Human, but not so human.
